The San Francisco Giants have reportedly offered a 1 year / 1 million dollar deal to shortstop Edgar Renteria (who happened to be the World Series MVP)
Edgar is offended and indicated that he'd rather stay home with his family for that kind of money.
He's 100% right.
In reading the comments that abound on the internet the vast majority seem to fall into one camp.
- 1 million dollars is a lot of money so he should shut up
Which shows an amazing lack of perspective.
Look at it this way. If you earn 50K and your boss turns around and offers you 5K next year, I am pretty sure you'd be pissed and probably say the exact same thing.
You see, Edgar hasn't earned less than 2 million per season since 1998. In the last 12 years he's earned about 85.5 million dollars.
So why should he accept a 90% paycut?
Do you see what I mean? You cannot relate other people's salary to your own. He's used to making 10 million a season, so in his mind that is what he's worth. Just be cause he earns many multiples of what the rest of us earn is not the point. He isn't the "rest of us".
The Giants should have either made him a fair offer (1 year 4 or 5 million) or simply moved on. They don't gain anything by throwing out an offer that is clearly not going to be accepted and just makes them look cheap.
