As I have written before, I once loved Bill Simmons. I remember sitting at my work and literally having to leave the office because I was laughing so hard I couldn't breath (let alone work) while reading one of his columns.
But he's pure fluff now...he's become what the Bill Simmons of ten years ago would have hated...he's not relevant (unless you could his "my daughter likes the color purple" as deep stuff) and less and less readable by the column.
His latest opus is on the imaginary "rivalry" between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady...I could point out that football is a team sport and individuals who play the same position rarely have big rivalries in football...but the reality is that there is no rivalry...Tom Brady is Joe Montana and Peyton Manning is Dan Marino...what else is there to say? Brady is 8-4 head to head against Peyton, his winning percentage is best all time, he's ahead on Superbowls wins 3-1 and Superbowl appearances 4-2...he's so far ahead on playoff record 14-4 vs 9-8 that it's absurd...
Manning is a fantastic regular reason QB and a 1st ballot hall of famer (just like Marino) but there is no question that Brady is the better QB.
I should add that it's embarrasing that an aging fantasy sports playing white guy thinks he has the street cred to use the Biggie/Tupac feud as the basis of his "rivalry" conditions....the lack of self awareness there is amazing.
I should add that the most absurd comment in the piece is this one:
The only reason Favre's streak of 297 starts doesn't seem like a bigger deal? Because Manning is poised to break it in 2016. He's 89 away. And after watching him play in 2008 on a twice-operated-on knee that suffered a staph infection, it's pretty clear we'll need a chainsaw (or Bernard Pollard swinging a chainsaw) to prevent Manning from breaking that record. How high could he go? 300? 325? Imagine if Cal Ripken also finished with 4,000 hits and 800 homers … couldn't that be Manning?
Wow...Peyton Manning turns 35 in March...so Simmons is tossing out 2016 like it's some sort of fait accompli...89 games is the next full 5 seasons (35-39) and more than half of his 40th year (19th season)...with an 18 game season...it's the end of the 5th season...
In other words...the reason people don't care about Brett Favre is a) games started in a row is a bullshit meaningless statistic b) people hate Brett Favre...not because people thought "Peyton is only 89 away!" as if we all have his current streak written on our fucking calendars.
