MIA + Jeter

My apologies for being MIA, I am considering what do with the future of the blog and have been involved elsewhere...

So...another bullshit puff piece from Tom Verducci...on Derek Jeter sucking:

Long is betting on the bounceback, especially because he knows one element to Jeter's issues last season is gone: Jeter doesn't have a contract situation to concern him.

"I feel like Derek always has been the type of player who cares about winning instead of the numbers," Long said. "I think the contract probably caused him to think more about numbers than he otherwise would want to. It probably did affect his performance.

For the millionth time...interviewing team personnel about team personnel is ALWAYS a waste of time.

Let's parse.

The team's hitting coach is blaming Derek Jeter's lack of hitting on the fact that Jeter was worried about his next contract.

Sigh

Derek Jeter has earned 205 MILLION so far in his baseball career and earned 8.5 million in endorsements in 2010. Being reasonable, let's assume he's now earned 250-300 million in his career.

In other words...there are a number of ways Long could answer the question.

1) I suck as a hitting coach
2) Derek Jeter is old and losing his skills
3) Derek Jeter was worried about a contract

Do you see what I mean? He can't say that he is the problem and he can't say that Jeter is old because he just resigned for 3 more years. His only option is to come up with some sort of bullshit response that intimates that a guy who has earned 300 million in his career was so worried about his next contract that he spent a year sucking.
